Spencer County Democrats Gather for Annual Fish Fry
JULY 26, 2020 CHRISNEY, IN – Spencer County Democrats gathered for their annual Fish Fry at the Spencer County 4-H Center in Chrisney on Sunday, July 26th. Plans for the 2020 version of the event were a little different with extra distance between tables to allow for social distancing and the addition of plenty of masks and hand sanitizer to keep everyone safe.
The day began with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a prayer led by Commissioner Al Logsdon. The theme of the afternoon was Friends and Neighbors Putting PEOPLE First.
Jonathan Weinzapfel – Candidate for Attorney General
The final and featured speaker for Sunday’s program was former Evansville Mayor and current Attorney General candidate Jonathan Weinzapfel. Weinzapfel told the crowd that if elected he would fight for Hoosiers’ access to healthcare and take Indiana out of ideological lawsuits such as Indiana’s participation in the ongoing lawsuit against the Affordable Care Act. Weinzapfel also emphasized he would restore integrity to the Attorney General’s office, a reference to current Attorney General Curtis Hills’ recent suspension from the practice of law by the Indiana Supreme Court.
Thomasina Marsili – 8th District Congressional Candidate
Spencer County Democrats also welcomed their candidate for the 8th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, Thomasina Marsili. Marsili isn’t new to Spencer County having grown up here and graduated from Heritage Hills High School. Members of her family still call Spencer County home. During her remarks, Marsili called for a moment of silence for those lost to the current COVID pandemic and led the crowd in the Lord’s Prayer. She closed by saying, “This vote is not just for you or me. When we cast a vote this year, it is about this little girl in front of me; her future.”
A touching moment occurred during the program when 96 year-old attendee William Kitchens of Newburgh was recognized as the only person in the room to have cast a vote for Franklin D. Roosevelt for President. Kitchens made the trip from Newburgh to show his support for Congressional candidate Thomasina Marsili.
John Hurley – District 75 State Representative Candidate
The crowd also heard remarks from District 75 State Representative candidate John Hurley. Hurley is a Spencer County native and industrial arts teacher at South Spencer High School. Hurley said his main objectives if elected would be to support public education and teachers, to fight for the rights of workers, and to defend Constitutional Rights. He specifically voiced his support for repealing Indiana’s so-called “Right to Work” law and reinstating the common construction wage. Hurley also emphasized the need to support voting rights and insure that all eligible Hoosiers have access to the ballot.
Candidates for local races in attendance were also recognized during the program including Judge Jon Dartt, Clerk Sara Arnold, Dist. 2 Commissioner Al Logsdon, Recorder candidate Jon Wright, Dist. 3 Commissioner candidate Vince Luecke, and County Council candidates Frank Durbin, Jr. and Bob Compton.
